I want to talk to you about K.I.S.S. NO, no...not these guys ⬆️(the epic heavy metal rock band KISS). Oh and BTW...I know I’m showing my age, but what can I say? I was a total KISS fan back in the day:)
Anyway...what I’m really talking about is the expression that I’m sure you’ve heard before, KEEP IT SIMPLE, STUPID. And it most certainly applies to our health and longevity... probably, like nothing else.
As human beings, we overly complicate pretty much EVERYTHING… Especially when it comes to our health. Fancy, elaborate training programs, meal plans, the latest and greatest FAD [fill in the blank]. And hours and hours of cardio. I mean, who has time for all that?
So, here are my 5 things to prioritize, to live your best life. I promise they won’t overwhelm you...and some will lead to immediate benefits and results. Enjoy.
SLEEP:
Most of us don’t get nearly enough sleep. For me, when I don’t get enough, I just don’t feel good, which adds to my stress levels the next day. And I know for a fact that for some of us, it’s the most stressful time of the day.
Think about it...it’s in your control how much sleep you get, and the benefits can’t be disputed. So, if you struggle at all, try spending at least 7 hours in bed every night this week. Turn off the electronics 30 minutes prior. And make sure your sleeping environment is as neat and clean as possible.
HYDRATION:
Our bodies are made up of anywhere from 67% - 74% water, depending on the day. That’s A LOT! And keep in mind we lose water as we age. So, it’s important and if you’re not drinking enough water throughout the day, your body won’t function optimally.
There’s a general rule...you should consume at least half your body weight in ounces of water each day. For example. I weigh approximately 170 lbs...so I should be drinking about 85 ounces daily. (I don’t BTW).
Honestly, I think it’s unrealistic for most of us. So, like anything else, do your best...don’t judge the quality of your day by how much water you drank or for that matter, how many steps you took. Just slowly ramp up your intake to get started. Make it easy.
COLORFUL VEGETABLES:
“Eat a rainbow every day.” That’s really it, folks. We all understand why. They’re just loaded with nutrients and fiber. And you don’t need to eat 10 lbs daily to reap the benefits. Just try including multi-colored vegetables with every meal. And if that’s not realistic, try chopping some up and store in containers so you can just grab and go.
Like anything, make it work for you and your situation.
STRENGTH:
My FAVORITE! What can I say? Getting stronger is the SINGLE, MOST BENEFICIAL THING we can do for your health and longevity. It helps us do the things we want to do and love...to live the life we want.
TAKE A BREAK:
I’m absolutely NOT talking about ALWAYS having to do something. Polar opposite.
How about stress-relieving activities like just focusing on your breath and recovery
(https://youtu.be/l7PJ_nXMZG0). Or simply go outside for an easy walk in nature.
And if you’re just starting out...pick one of the above and practice it this week. Once you make it your own, you can add more if you like.
BIG TAKEAWAY:
Ultimately, if you prioritize the simple stuff and avoid overly complicating things, you’ll move closer to your health and fitness goals with less effort and stress than you thought possible. Notice your body and mind flourish as a result.
Dedicated to your health and longevity,
Mike
